The safe weekly AI money review
Goal: a short weekly check that catches overspending, odd charges and missed transfers. Time: 20 minutes to set up, 10 minutes a week.
Not financial advice. AI assistants can make mistakes with numbers, so double-check anything you act on.
Pick your data path
| Path | Effort | Privacy trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| A. Redacted CSV (any assistant) | Export transactions weekly, remove account numbers, upload | Least exposure: you choose exactly what's shared |
| B. Read-only connector | One-time setup | The connector and the AI provider see your transactions. Read-only means it can't change anything |
| C. Read/write connector | One-time setup | The assistant can edit your budget data. Only enable writes you understand |
Our tracker shows which connectors are read-only, which can write, and which are paused. For example, Monarch's official connector has been paused since June 2026, and Tiller's Claude connector can only update categories and notes.
Set it up once
- Claude: create a Project called "Money" and paste in your budget plus the weekly money review prompt as project instructions.
- ChatGPT: if you're in the US and use ChatGPT Finances, start with "@Finances run my weekly money review" and paste the prompt. Otherwise upload a CSV.
- Grok: save the prompt in a note, start a new chat each Sunday, and attach the CSV. Grok Bot users can ask it to run this on a schedule if their plan supports scheduled tasks.
Every Sunday (10 min)
- Export or sync this week's transactions.
- Run the prompt.
- Do the one action it suggests.
- Once a month, run the subscription audit and monthly money report instead.
Safety rules
- Never paste bank passwords, MFA codes or full account numbers into any chat.
- Prefer OAuth connectors you can revoke over ones that ask for your password.
- Unofficial connectors that log in as you (for example community Monarch servers) carry extra risk.
